Lidl Gingerbread plait [special guests]

The gingerbread plait was surprisingly nice.
It was like eating a crunchy pecan plait but filled with sweet crunchy sugary gingerbread cookie puree.
So you can imagine the filling tasting like a pureed gingerbread cookie with crunchy sugar in it.
The pastry is just the regular plait puff pastry.
Worth a try because it is different.

Lidl deluxe octopus carpaccio

I have been wanting to try this for years but held back because the ones I had in the tin were not nice.
Ultimately you can't beat restaurant slow cooked or fresh ones.
Anyway, it was surprisingly nice in terms of mouth feel because it was springy and not mushy.
Flavour wise, you have to eat a fair bit to notice the taste of the octopus because you taste the heavy oils and lemon which is ok but some might prefer a balanced taste of octopus and seasoning.
I would say, it was ingenious that they serve them as carpaccio slices because some parts can be quite tough so by thinly slicing it served in the oil, it makes it much tender to eat.

Brazilian Nissin miojo caldinho de feijão instant noodle

When I saw this, I had to try it because caldinho de feijao is my favourite Brazilian bean stew!!
The packet is slightly different to other instant noodles because it is flatter.
The noodles are also very different in the sense they are thinner and flatter.
Despite the noodles being thinner, they take just as long to soften up during cooking.
There are no beans in the instant noodles but I enjoyed the bean stew flavouring.
On the noodle packet, it features a Brazilian comic character Turma do Chico Bento.

Rice and Broad beans with dill by Hani Foods

Spotted these long boxes of ready meals at this international convenience shop in Eastbourne so I thought I'd give it a try because I love Persian food.
The container was unique because it was a huge flat tin which you boil.
I got the Rice and Broad beans with dill and there was an aubergine one too but from experience Persian dill rice never fails.
Unfortunately, I didn't check the expiry date as it had already expired but it should still be ok to consume.
To my surprise, if you microwave it the rice tastes as good as the ones I tried at the restaurants.
The texture was soft and fluffy and it was tasty.
There are so many other products from Hani Foods, I would love to get my hands on like the celery stew and ash reshteh (soup).

Takfoods sour cherry falooda and honey melon ice cream

Got these Takfood products from a local international store.
They look middle Eastern because of the flavours especially the falooda but they are somehow made in Poland!
The honey melon ice cream was palatable with a strong melon taste but was a bit too sweet.
The sour cherry falooda was disappointing as you could only taste rose.

Sainsburys mini fish pie puffs

[Sainsburys mini fish pie puffs review]
These Sainsburys mini fish pie puffs were captivating because firstly I love fish pies and they look like mini swirl buns.
To be honest, I'm quite confused why they are called puffs or even pie because its more like a fluffy bread with a crispy exterior when cooked.
There is no pastry at all so its more like a mini crispy bread burger with mash potato filling.
It was not flakey and very different to buttery puff pastry although the top half was like a roll.
Somehow, it reminded me of the dumplings you get in English stews if they were baked.
The filling was mainly mashed potato and there were not much prawns or even fish as listed in the ingredients but the percentage of prawns is very low like 18%.
(Labelled as filled with king prawns, leek and potatoes).
The taste isn't bad if you like dill and potatoes which I do but was a little oily.

Sainsbury chocolate pistachio baton (taste the difference)

The Sainsbury chocolate pistachio baton did not disappoint.
Chocolate and puff pastries always go well.
The new pistachio chocolate batons really delivered as you got this tasty pistachio curd in the middle and then I liked the chocolate chips here and there.
You can choose the ones with more/less chocolate chips to your liking.
On top of the pastry, it was studded with crushed pistachio which gave it a that overall pistachio finish.

Horlicks Pudding flavoured drinks from Poundland

Horlicks have come out with some new pudding inspired drinks to keep our winter sweet!
These are apple pie, banoffee and cherry bakewell so I had to try them.
They are £2.50 from Poundland so I got the cherry bakewell and the apple pie.
When you peel off the seal, there isn't much distinctive aroma for both flavours but when you add hot water, you can really smell the almond in the cherry bakewell.
Anyway, I felt that the cherry almond was really nice and tasted like this almond drink in Asia which is also made from some powder.
The apple pie wasn't really strong, it was like horlicks mixed with a faint flavour from apple chews or apple chewing gum.
I can imagine the banoffee tasting like artificial banana even though I haven't tried.
To summarize, probably the cherry bakewell is worth trying if you like artificial almond.

M&S roasted hazelnut chocolatine

Very tasty chocolate hazelnut pastry from M&S.
It was not too sweet with lots of chunky hazelnuts.
Much nicer than the almond cherry croissant.
As well as the bakery you can also get it at the M&S cafe.
