Every supermarket is doing a good variety of meats for the summer BBQ, Lidl and Aldi have chimmichurri steaks, while most offer Chinese style pork.
Traditonal Cantonese Chinese roast pork (char siu) uses the shoulder cut, however from my supermarket finds, Tescos, Iceland and Sainsburys offer the belly cut and Lidl has the shoulder cut.
To compare with Chinese roast pork, I got the Lidl Chinese style pork shoulder steaks.
There is no right and wrong which cut to use as it is for BBQ but for the sake of Chinese roast pork the shoulder steak is a better choice.
When I took the meat out from the packet, there was a strong smell of aniseed and five spice.
Overall, the taste was spot on with a strong aniseed taste.
If you want a more authentic taste, try glazing it with malt syrup or honey so that it will caramelized.
According to the ingredients, beetroot was used for the colouring.
To summarize, it tasted good but the pork was like cuts of pork glued together hence I give it a 3/5 rating.
